Sunnydale is possibly like that™️ on purpose, a town built on a hellmouth to draw the demonic energy into our world. Demons feed on the misery they are able to cause, like the demon in Gingerbread that lives on creating distrust and hatred.
Putting the high school right above the doorway is just the finishing touch, a miniature society filled with the same experiences, boosted by hormones and the novelty of experiencing everything for the first time.
